The Only National Park in Tanzania on an Island

Rubondo IslandRubondo Island located in southwest Lake Victoria is Tanzania’s only island National Park. The 240 sq km island provides a unforgettable experience for visitors, combining the breathtaking natural beauty of a forest refuge with the relaxing tranquility of sandy lake-shore beaches.

Giraffe, elephant, hippo and crocodiles can be found on Rubondo Island. The island boasts a unique diversity of flora and fauna. Only here you can be sure of seeing sitatunga and have the chance of observing chimpanzees (experimental stage). Other mammals frequently seen include otters, bushbuck and vervet monkeys. Rarer sightings are colobus, genet, marsh mongoose, suni antelope.

Hippo's near Rubondo IslandRubondo is a paradise for bird-lovers with nearly 400 species documented on the island. The island has an abundance of herons, storks, ibises, egrets, cormorants, kingfishers, bee-eaters, flycatchers, hornbills and birds of prey, including the highest density of fish eagles anywhere in the world.

Visitors have the freedom to explore the forest and lakeshore by foot or by boat, allowing each visitor to create his or her own memorable experience..


Day 1 Bukoba – Rubondo Island

From Bukoba you drive in 3 hours to Muganza. Here you take a boat to Rubondo Island National Park (20 minutes). At the island a car will bring you through the forest to the bandas or lodge in a 20 minutes drive. If you are lucky you can spot the first game here on the way to your lodging.

On the island it is possible to organise several tours. Walking Tours through the identified path in the forest take 2-3 hours. On the way you can meet giraffe, sitatunga, elephant and hippos, you can go sport fishing, go for a boat ride to see hippos, crocodiles and birds or just relax at the swimming pool. In the evenings you can sit around the open fire and enjoy the African evenings.

Day 3 Rubondo Island - Bukoba
The boat brings you back to the mainland, Muganza port. From here you will be picked up and you drive back to Bukoba (3 hours).

Banda Option: Pick up and drop off in Bukoba by private car, transfer to Island by boat, Park entrance fees, accommodation in double room, English speaking guide.

Prices are Exclusive of the following:
Tipping the crew and items of personal nature and tours on the island are not included in the price. The banda option does not include food, you are advised to bring your own food and cook in the fully equipped kitchen.

It is also possible to fly to Rubondo Island from Bukoba, Mwanza or Serengeti, ask us for the rates.
