ANNOUNCING THE OPENING OF
A MUSEUM IN BUKOBA

 

Inviting guidance, advice and support

Kagera Museum was registered under the Trustees’ Incorporation Ordinance (Cap.375) on 6 December 2001. Its Chairman is Dr. Kaiser Ndyetabula a Tanzanian indigenous to Kagera who lives in Botswana. The Secretary is Mrs Mary C. Kalikawe a resident of Bukoba who is Managing Director of the first tour operator in Bukoba Kiroyera Tours. Other members of the trust are: Mr Peter Kalugila of P. O. Box 144 Muleba, Mr G. Rugomora of Box 233, Bukoba, Mr R. A. Mwombeki of Box 2750 Dar es Salaam and Mr Shabir Hussein Khalfan Managing Director of Bukoba Cyber Center.



The objectives of the Museum are to:

aaaa1. Display and preserve traditional items of cultural importance

aaaa2. Display information and items of historical importance

aaaa3. Display information on the religious history of the region.

aaaa4. Provide a place for the exhibition of fauna and flora found in the region

aaaa5. Identify and support local artists by providing a center where art shows and
aaaaiia exhibitions can be displayed

aaaa6. Provide and support a botanical garden which will feature indigenous plants

aaaa7. Support groups which may wish to promote local music

aaaa8. Establish a library where books written on the area can be kept

aaaa9. Organise periodic cultural festivals

aaa10. Provide a center for learning of traditional arts and wider intercultural interactions 

 

Assets available:

The Kagera Museum has received a house, which belongs to the chairman to be used at least for the immediate needs of a museum in Bukoba Town. This house is in Nyamkazi area opposite the airport and Lake view School.

The Museum has also received a 2-tone truck for use to develop the museum.

 

Immediate needs: 

Kagera has been blessed with services of a renowned photographer and Zoologist Mr Dick Persson. Mr Persson has during 4 years time discovered many unique species in Kagera Region not found anywhere else in Tanzania. He has prepared many excellent and unique photographs of Kagera’s Wildlife which he wishes to use in staging a Photo exhibition named “WILDLIFE THE GOLD OF KAGERA” This photo exhibition is expected to be a big advertising event of Kagera Region to the outside world. The outcome of the event will be attraction of Tourists to Kagera and possibly investors too. Mr Persson held a successful similar photo exhibition in Dar es Salaam in November last year, which had a title “Wildlife the Gold of Tanzania” it was held at the National Museum in Dar es salaam. The exhibition still attracts today many tourists and visitors. This idea has received blessings of the Kagera Tourism Steering Committee.

The Photo exhibition requires a Museum to which the photographs will be donated for posterity of the photo display and other displays that are in addition anthropological and historical to Kagera.

The photo exhibition is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of the coming year. The exact date has not been set yet. Mr Persson has approved the available museum house as a suitable venue for the photo exhibition albeit with a number of improvements. 

 

REQUEST FOR SUPPORT 

Five Million Tanzania shillings.

The improvements required on the museum house include a substantial list (some of which have already started) they include the following:

aaaa- Clearing vegetation and shrubs in front of the house

aaaa- Filling up pathways with soil and gravel

aaaa- Uplifting the paint on the house partly with oil paint, roof paint and partly plastic paint.

aaaa- Removing interior doors to have one open space inside the house

aaaa- Fitting glass on wall cabinets for display of particular items

aaaa- Preparing a hard ground parking area outside the museum perimeter wall

aaaa- Erecting two sides of the perimeter wall which have been left incomplete

aaaa- Leveling the grounds within the museum compound

aaaa- Installing two concrete stairs at the entrance of the Museum door

aaaa- Completing surfacing with terrazzo at the Museum door entrance

aaaa- Installing extra lighting within various sections of the museum house to enhance the
aaiiaaaquality of displays this involves upgrading the electricity. The electrical installation
aaiiaaamust be changed from single phase to 3 phase including the electrical panel to
aaiiaaaaccommodate the increased need of electricity supply.

aaaa- Cleaning and polishing the floor to high gloss quality or other quality floor presentation.

aaaa- Constructing the servants quarter toilet and building two outside toilets for public use

aaaa- Installing door locks of two store rooms, the kitchen and one rear outside door

aaaa- Improving all the windows so they lock properly, have sufficient security and rovers
aaiiaaado not leak when it rains.

aaaa- Prepare advertising boards and even labeling of rooms within the Museum.

 

The photo exhibition has so far received sponsorship from the Embassy of Denmark, which will sponsor the opening ceremony. Other sponsors like the Bank of Tanzania, CRDB –Bank, Scania, Ericsson and others have sponsored the production value of the photographs. The Bukoba community and all well wishers are requested to assist with uplifting the face of the museum so as to make the event of the photo exhibition a big marketing event for Kagera Region and Bukoba town.

The Kagera Museum Trust wishes to raise funds to the tune of Tsh 5,000,000/= (Five million)
