KIROYERA TOURS REGISTERS PROGRESS

Tourists in Bukoba

During the five months of August to December 2002 the company handled 95 bona fide tourists including those who came only for enquiries. There were at least 3 to 5 times more tourists who were in Bukoba during this period but did not get to Kiroyera Tours. Besides foreign tourists, this period had many local people of Bukoba origin who live elsewhere in Tanzania or abroad who were back home to celebrate Christmas and the new Year.

aaaaSports Tourism: The Tanzania mainland Football league brought many visitors to Bukoba. Teams involved were from Kagera itself, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro and Tabora.
aaaaConference tourism: This was registered in October at the conference of “ African- Asian International Rural Development workshop, which was held in Bukoba under the Kolping society of Tanzania. The meeting was attended by more than 40 delegates from Asia, other countries of Africa and locally.

Visited attractions

The main sites visited during this period were those very close to Bukoba Town including Musila Island, Kyamunene water falls, Rubale Forest, Karobela Beach, Kibuye traditional Iron smith works and Makongo village for traditional line fishing.

The reason for visited attractions being very close to Bukoba town is that many tourists discovered Kiroyera tours services when they were already in Bukoba ( The company is less than one year old). These tourists therefore had very little time or finances left before they were to leave for their pre planned destinations. However, one repeat visit was registered to Musila island. The company also received approval on the tour we arranged for 11 tourists who visited Rubondo Island National Park from Muleba.

Visitor source countries

The tourists patronizing Kiroyera tours were from many different countries including America, Austria, Belgium, Costa Rica, Czech republic, East Africa (Local), Denmark, England, Germany, Israel, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Kiroyera tours received enquiries from Tour operators in Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro and Kampala about our western Attractions and the possibility of handling the tourists.

Type of Tourists

Tourists arrived in Bukoba due to a number of reasons. Some were on package tours through Uganda to view gorillas of Impenetrable forests, volcanic mountains, Murchison falls National Park, Jinja‘s source of the Nile and the equator. A large proportion of tourists were students from either Sweden, Germany or Denmark. These had come to Bukoba on familiarization tours of Africa and its life styles. These were largely interested in Budget tours. The company, however, arranged a tour of Serengeti national Park for two students from Denmark.

Kiroyera Tours' Ongoing Efforts

Bukoba celebrates World Tourism Day 27 September 2002.

“Ecotourism the key to sustainable Development” Kiroyera tours spearheaded the first ever tourism awareness campaign in Bukoba. The year 2002 was the International year of ecotourism. This was the most opportune time for injecting awareness so that the neglected enormous tourism potential of Kagera region could begin taking its rightful place in Tanzania’s tourism.

The World Tourism day was marked by a number of activities including public announcements in streets about our tourism resources and the socio economic benefits of tourism. There was a float through Bukoba, a public speech by the Mayor of Bukoba at the town’s bus stand and a mini exhibition at one of the oldest and renowned hotels in town “The Coffee Tree Inn”. Bukoba community contributed funds towards the success of the event.

We need to develop Bukoba’s local attractive sites like Musila island, Maruku’s Rubale forest and Karobela beach plus Iguruibi hill within Bukoba town.
