ADRENALINE
RUSH!
NEWSFLASH:
On Thursday 20th May 2004 the Minister for Natural Resources
& Tourism in Tanzania; Mrs. Zakia Meghji visited Bukoba.
We received this welcome news at short notice and are delighted
that she insisted her itinerary included a visit to the Kagera
Museum!
Mrs. Meghji was full of praise for the work
done by the trustees and the foresight to establish such a great
venue. Indeed she noted that the museum is the first in Tanzania
that has been established and operated by local people! She
marveled at the display by Mr. Dick Persson and was intrigued
by some of the cultural artifacts and even attempted to operate
some of them!
She is fully expectant that the museum will
be a symbol of the continued development of cultural tourism
in Kagera. In recognition of this she has been quick to enlist
the services of our own tourism pioneer from Kiroyera Tours:
Mrs. Mary Kalikawe. Mary is delighted to accept the invitation
to become a member of: NATIONAL COLLEGE OF TOURISM ADVISORY
BOARD (this primarily deals with training within the industry)
and also on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE TANZANIAN TOURIST
BOARD (TTB). This board is the main decision maker for the national
level agenda. This is significant, exciting and welcome news
for Mary, Kiroyera Tours and all of Kagera! Well Done Mary!
The museum is fast establishing itself as a
prominent attraction within the region. Indeed the international
NGO - VSO are holding a regional meeting at the museum as it
serves as a great venue with its superb surroundings, excellent
facilities and the location means it is easily accessible from
town.
Kagera Museum Trust
Friday 16th May 2004 is a date
to live long in the memory of those in Bukoba. The newly formed
Museum opened its doors for the first time to great acclaim.
The official opening saw many dignitaries, community leaders
and most importantly local people in attendance.
The event boasted local dancing, music and food
in an evening full of celebration. This is the only museum in
the Kagera region. It operates as a non-profit organization
with the express desire to promote and preserve the intriguing
local culture.
The central attraction of the museum is the
fabulous “Wildlife: the Gold of Kagera” photographic exhibition,
generously donated by the revered professional photographer,
Mr. Dick Persson. In recognition of this gift and also for his
lengthy period of service to the region Mr. Persson is to be
honoured by the trustees during a civic ceremony to be held
soon.
ROUTES:
With the rapid approach of the most popular Tourist season occurring
we are pleased to announce that the new Kiroyera Tours brochure
is in Production. This document details all of our fantastic
routes and tours and is as useful directory of the most impressive
sights in Kagera.
BUKOBA:
We extend our sympathy to Mr. Superius who has suffered a problem
at home as a consequence of a fallen tree landing upon his roof!
Mercifully no-one was injured. This followed one of the most
severe storms in Bukoba during recent memory. In the early hours
of the morning the populous of the town were abruptly awoken
by near blinding lightening and near deafening thunder.
A real marvel of nature but one the town will
happily wait many years before witnessing again – especially
as the electricity supply was disrupted for the whole day!
