It is set between the water’s edge and a rugged backdrop of rock cliffs that are like a massive protective shield around the African town.

Colonialists, missionaries, traders, explorers, international aid organizations, friends of people of Bukoba and refugees from Africa discovered Bukoba many years ago and have been blended into the rhythm of its present society.

Buhaya (as the larger part of Kagera region was known) had 8 kingdoms, which lasted for about 5 centuries. Kings lived in elaborate palaces. The demise of these kingdoms left ruins of which some can be seen today.
